Evelyn Paige has been part of Weald Parish Council for more than 50 years after first being elected on November 24, 1959. She is its longest-serving member and in her honour, her fellow councillors held a celebratory lunch for her.
Evelyn was presented with several personal gifts and a pewter bowl, which – in recognition of her long involvement with the allotments in the Weald, will carry her name and be awarded on an annual basis to the allotment holder of the year.
Chairman Rosie Wood told Miss Paige she was her role model and praised both her true dedication and her ability to master and challenge an ever-changing tide of culture. The only woman councillor until 1974, she has missed just a handful of meetings.
Clerk John Caird said, “Her experience, wisdom and local knowledge have been invaluable to the many councillors who have served with her.”
